Training Workshop on Forensic Psychiatry and Criminal Law

On 19-20 January, 2018, the Delhi Judicial Academy in collaboration with the Death Penalty Project, London and Centre on the Death Penalty,NLUD, organized a training workshop on forensic psychiatry.The workshop was an effort towards identifying and addressing the schism between forensic mental health and criminal law. Attended by 15 Delhi trial court judges, 15 legal aid lawyers, and 15 mental health professionals, the workshop was aimed at familiarising participants about significant developments in forensic psychiatry and its possible implementation in the Indian criminal justice system.
The workshop focused on legal procedures and practices relating to the judicial treatment of mental health issues such as assessing capacity to stand trial, the insanity defense, and mental health evaluations at the sentencing stage.
